MATCH REPORTS

9/3/14

PONTELAND PUMAS 3-2 MORPETH PANTHERS

At last the rain stopped and the lads headed down to table leaders Ponteland, where the weather and playing surface were excellent. The Panthers came out strongly and looked in control for the first quarter of an hour. However, Ponteland are top of the table for a reason and in the ten minutes before half time, their movement created real problems for the Panthers defence and they scored three times.
Jamie made a few tactical tweaks at half-time and the Morpeth lads resumed with a high tempo.
Oscar had assumed an unfamiliar position at right back and was soon making a major impact with strong challenges and tackles. Ben was outstanding, pulling the strings in midfield and James Brady did as James does, latching on to through balls, scoring twice.
Again and again the Panthers drove forwards, testing the Ponteland defenders. Finally James broke through, only to see his shot strike the upright. And so it ended, unfortunately the Panther's second half 'lion-hearted' efforts were in vain.
However, irrespective of the result, it was the game of football that was the real winner today.

16/3/14

MORPETH PANTHERS 0-0 MORPETH PUMAS

There is nothing like a local derby to stir the blood. Sadly, the weather didn't help and the powerful, icy winds were always a factor in today's game. That said, the sides were evenly matched and both teams gave of their best.
Ross was tireless in midfield and he linked well with Jamie who was always looking to run at his opposing full-back. Ciaran looked assured in central defence and had excellent support from Jake and James Watson. Our defenders had some busy spells but operated as a unit and communicated well. In attack, the boys tried to get the ball down to play their passing game but despite some great attempts, couldn't break the deadlock.
So the Morpeth 'bragging rights' were shared, honour was satisfied and everyone was glad to get back indoors!

23/3/14

MORPETH PANTHERS 1-6 NEWCASTLE EAST END REDS

During the game, I commented to the EE Reds' coach that his team were the best I have seen at Pegswood this season. I expect them to win the Division. And they ran out 1-6 winners today. They deserve all the plaudits.
However, that isn't the full story. The game itself was actually far more even than the scoreline would suggest. And what must have pleased Jamie & Michael most, was that the lads continued to give everything they had until the final whistle. No heads went down, they tackled, ran and created as if it was all square. That is a sign of commitment and true team spirit. Finally, the performances of Harry and Jake were also real highlights against a quality outfit.
And then there was the goal. Ben took a free kick quickly, Ross collected and raced into their half; as he was closed down by two defenders, he turned and pushed the ball through to Luke who hammered it into the net - Alan Shearer would have been proud of that one!
So a good game to watch...here's to the next weeks visit from Blyth Town!

9/4/14

MORPETH PANTHERS 0-3 BLYTH TOWN

Wednesday night saw a visit from high flying Blyth Town. With striker James Brady still injured, this was always going to be a challenge. The loss of centre-back Ciaran to a recurrence of a knee problem in the first half, only exacerbated the situation.
However, the boys tried hard and did well to limit their opponents scoring opportunities. Ross broke through annd was brought down in the penalty area but unfortunately, the referee saw no infringement. Oscar latched on to a through ball from midfield but was halted by an excellent challenge by the Blyth defender. There were also good performances from Adam, Max and Luke, the latter returned to his more familiar position in nets.
Sadly, despite the Panthers' best efforts, Blyth just proved to have too much for them tonight.

13/4/14

MORPETH PANTHERS 1-5 WEST DENTON

No report available yet because the 'press officer' couldn't attend the match!
However, I will be doing some research with eye witnesses...watch this space.
